1. SC ruled 3 percent quota for disabled persons in all government jobs
i. The Supreme Court ruled 3 percent quota for disabled persons in all government jobs.
ii. A bench headed by Chief Justice R M Lodha said that the disabled people have not got their due in the last 19 years. Despite the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act was passed in 1995. The bench also comprised Justices Kurian Joseph and Rohinton F Nariman.

iii. On the other hand, government contended that reservation cannot be given in case of promotion to Group A and Group B officers category as it is not a case of appointment. Further, it claimed that the Persons With Disabilities Act provides for three per cent quota for the differently-abled people





2. WHO honoured Bangladesh and Timor-Leste for Excellence in Public Health
i. The World Health Organisation (WHO) honoured Bangladesh and Timor-Leste with South East Asia Regional Award for Excellence in Public Health.
ii. The newly instituted awards were presented to Saima Hossain of Bangladesh and National Malaria Control Programme of Timor-Leste in Dhaka on 10 September 2014.
iii. Saima Hossain was conferred the Award in the individual category for leadership in advancing the cause of Autism in South East Asia and worldwide.
iv. She is a chairperson of National Advisory Committee on Neuro development and Autism in the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare of Bangladesh.
v. The National Malaria Control Programme of Timor-Leste was conferred the Award in the region category for its aggressive anti-malaria effort which has drastically reduced malaria cases in Timor-Leste.


3. Raya Power to set up 50 MW solar park in Andhra Pradesh
i. Rays Power Experts announced to set up 50 mw Solar Power Generation Park in Andhra Pradesh. The total cost of the project is 300 crore ruppes and it will be completed by January 2015.
ii. The project includes the complete infrastructure designing of the project, its technical and engineering ground work, installation and commissioning.

4. Chitresh Tatha is the youngest sailor at the Asian Games 2014
i. Chitresh Tatha, 12, is the youngest sailor to represent India at the 2014 Asian Games . He sails in the Optimist Dinghy category.
ii. The 17th edition Asian Games will be held in Incheon, South Korea from 19 September to 4 October 2014.


5. SBI celebrated 150 years of its operations in Sri Lanka
i. State Bank of India, SBI, celebrated 150 years of its operations in Sri Lanka at a glittering ceremony Friday evening. Addressing a gathering in Colombo, SBI Managing Director Krishna Kumar reaffirmed the bank's commitment to partner in Sri Lanka’s efforts in developing its economy.
ii. Sri Lanka’s Central Bank Chief thanked SBI for believing in Sri Lanka and investing money and skill in development of the country.


6. Peru to sign free trade pact with India
i. Latin American nation Peru has plans to sign a free trade agreement with New Delhi to ship more of minerals and metals it produces.
ii. “Peru got permission to sell gold to India in 2011. We began exporting in 2012 and shipped out 106 million ounces. Last year, we exported 270 million ounces. This year, it will be even higher,” said Javier Paulinich, Ambassador of Peru to India. He is in Pune in connection with the 11th India International Gold Convention – 2014.


Note: Peru is the sixth largest gold producer, mining 5 million ounces every year. Peru is also the second largest producer of silver and the third biggest producer of copper, tin, zinc and lead.


7. Food inflation remains flat at 9.4 %
i. Retail inflation moderated slightly to 7.8 per cent in August from 7.96 per cent in July on the softening of the prices of vegetables and fuels. Food inflation finally showed signs of coming under control, remaining flat at 9.4 per cent.
ii. However, it remained higher than the June level of 7.97 per cent, according to official data released here on Friday.
iii. The rate of price rise in vegetables climbed down to 15.15 per cent in August against 16.88 per cent in July. Inflation in cereals moderated marginally from 7.5 per cent to 7.4 per cent. The rate of inflation for the category ‘fuel and light’ declined somewhat to 4.15 per cent from 4.47 per cent.
